[The feed switches on to a dismal view of the river in the process of overflowing, then shifts as Saul raises the PCD to scowl into it. He's standing just outside the doorway of the house he'd chosen for himself - shirtless, hair a little ruffled, largely looks like he'd just gotten out of bed and found something he isn't happy with.]

Well. There goes my water pump.

Not as planned at all.

Edited in a bit later, voice:

... I see. That was not very pretty.

You'd think a woman like her would have no enemies.

Do you like it?

The storm. I thought I had built the pump well enough... a shame.

L certainly has a lot to say. It's almost cute, how he has focused on you. Though it's a poor detective who is still on that side of the law; the true challenge lays on the opposite side.

He seems to have settled on his answer before even beginning the investigation.

Hah, I'd agree, but as a Guardian I have never been on any side of any law. We are beyond them. You are an outlaw where you come from, doma?

The overconfident always do so.

I have become one, by choice. When you are the world's greatest crime solver, there is no where else to go; no challenges left. So I created a new one, and lead an organization back home.

It is not difficult, making people fear you. You have accomplished this. What is difficult, though, is getting respect as well as that fear. That is my forte.

Is that so? Hah, doma Carmen, I've a feeling we two could get along! What does your organization do, then?

I do not know that people fear me... I don't much care, myself. I know my worth.

I think it may be possible indeed. We tend to stick to my favorite occupation - stealing landmarks. Not only is it a different challenge in every location, it shakes the peoples' faith in their country and leadership. My entire world knows my name, and hope that I never drop by.

Here, though, there are not many in whom to have faith. So there is a gap to fill.

The anger directed towards you is a result of fear. But I do not know that it would serve a greater purpose.

... you may have to explain to me how exactly you steal landmarks, although I salute the logic behind it.

If you're as good as you claim, it's only a matter of time, isn't it? But it seems to me I smell some proposition behind this talk.

Distract and slip past the guards, disable alarm systems, detach any clamps or cords that hold them down, and go. Occasionally a guard wound up disabled as well, but that was to be expected.

Indeed. To be honest, I am not sure if I am proposing anything at this point. Your abilities are impressive, and I like your drive. But the randomness and quantity of attacks... I am not certain how much I can work with you.

What think you on the matter?

Perhaps we are thinking of different things as landmarks, then...

Attacks? I grant you only that I killed the girl Chao, and the storm was an attack on no one. The rest is rumor and heresay and I can't say I approve of it. How we work together depends, I suppose, on the goal.

Mountains, buildings that have significant cultural meaning, a moon... it is a wide term, but it works.

That is well-put. What is your goal here?

... you've lost me again. How do you steal mountains and buildings?

My goal is rather obvious, isn't it? I'm a mercenary, what's my trade worth without conflict?

I suppose that is what you might call my ability.

So it is a war you seek. And once it has been won? What then? Will you side with whomever is in power, or seek more war? There will, of course, always be uprisings that must be put down when someone holds true power. Is that a satisfying enough conflict?

If so, that's a remarkable one. I've never seen its like, and I've seen everything.

Conflict is conflict, doma. Whether it's been nations, factions, groups, it's all the same and all one to me. But there'll be no war here - the community is too small and too desperate to break into camps.

Apparently not quite everything.

Perhaps there will not be war, but a takeover could be possible. There would, of course, be strife over that. People do not understand improvements, often, content with whatever mess they are currently in instead.

It could be possible, and probably exciting as it happened... are you sure you want to rule this city?

I do hope it winds up being exciting.

I am sure. There is no other challenge here for me otherwise. Stealing landmarks is not of consequence when there are none of interest and there is no force to challenge.

Ah well, ruling a city is definitely a challenge, though not the sort I'd tackle myself. Spending your days keeping lazy people safe and pleased... if you'll believe what they say, there are no other cities here to which to expand your rule.

I will not work to keep the lazy people pleased. Safe, perhaps. It is often good to have around one or two who are lesser, so that the others can feel better about themselves.

There does not appear to be another city, therefore I must be content with what is at hand.

You seem to have a good idea of what you're after. I commend that. Who rules this city and how doesn't much matter to me... if you want my services, you know how to acquire them.

Thank you.

I do, and I shall keep you in mind. Do let me know if you come across something that I may care to dabble in. Or if you could use my own services.
