[Saul's voice is sleep and somewhat confused, as though he'd woken up to an unexpected scene.]

... Duncan?

Gone. Just like that, rifle and all. Stupid, lucky lad.

[From the voices, it's obvious that the two speakers are walking as they talk. The faint sounds of the river are in the background. One of the speakers is recognizable as Saul; the other would only be known to those who have spoken to Duncan.]

"But the war, sir!"

"What of it? You can do nothing for the war, lad. This city is neither in Hyem nor Adalas. The war doesn't matter here."

"But it's - of course it matters, captain! Any day could be the decisive moment! We must go back, sir, some way!"

"Which way do you propose?"

"I - I don't know! We can start in whatever direction, North, Northeast, and see what we might find. But to stay in this city...!"

"We cannot leave the city."

"... sir?"

"Are you deaf, leiutennant? We can't leave. The forces keeping us here are beyond even me."

"... but... but... sir! Captain! You're - you're you!"

"..."

"Please, sir! For my country. You must understand, you're a Guardian - !"

"Duncan. Shut up. Before I forget myself."

[There's a whimper of profound despair, and then the feed switches off.]
