[The feed clicks on at random to an odd view: just outside of Saul's house, on the grassy riverfront, stands a low table decorated with fresh branches, flowers, fruits and even the occasional sweet. A dish of water with a pair of shining silver coins in it, and a mirror propped up, complete the small shrine - as that's rather obviously what it is. Saul is at the head of the table, kneeling, wearing bright festive clothes that he almost definitely sewed by himself. His head is down, hands on his knees. It's not hard to figure out that he is praying.

After a long minute of silence, he finally raises his head and moves back a little from the table, apparently still not noticing that the PCD is recording. He picks up a cup from the table, drinks it down in one gulp, then sits back, grinning. After another moment, he starts to sing softly in his own language. He isn't very good but not entirely bad.

The feed captures pretty much the whole song, before fading out.]

((OOC: I guess it'd sound a bit like this. Happy equinox, everyone XDDD))

Celebrating, Saul-san ?

Most certainly, doma. You are welcome to join me - I will not draw a blade on a holy day.

That would have been with pleasure, but I am afraid I have a prior engagement for today. Another time, maybe ? We are trying to organize Hanami, maybe you'll want to come.

It is a festival where we go watch the cheery blossom and drink.

Ahh, I see. Well, it sounds pleasant, but I do not keep the traditions of a people not my own; a man in exile must be careful to fix his heart on his own homeland. Still, enjoy your festival.

It is not a reliious celebration, just a contemplation of the fleeting nature of life. Besides, it is a time to partake in good alcohol as well.

Religion is not the issue, doma. I am Ilyigan and of the Eastern covenant, and these are the ways I will keep - the ways of others will only distract me from my own. Besides, a man should not leap at any chance to drink; restraint is the seed of strength, and such a vice the downfall of many a good soldier.

Understandable.

Alcohol in moderation is a thing everyone should learn to enjoy, whether a soldier or not. He is a sad one who cannot appreciate it.

Perhaps; but he is a sadder one who loses all self-possession, speaks when he shouldn't and winds up stabbed in the back when witless. And such things happen more often than you might suppose.

If it is what soldiers in your world do when exposed to alcohol, they need some serious training before they can be admitted on a battlefield ever again.

Men are men, doma. I know that you are no mere mortal, but they are, and they will be weak. Best to avoid some things altogether, there is nothing worse than dying a fool.

Not being human does not make us immune to alcohol, Saul-san. We have our share of drunkards, unfortunately.

But I can agree with you on that last point.

Mehregan, dome, the spring equinox.

Very much, though it's a shabby offering, all things considered. It would have been nice to have marjoram and kohl and the lot... well! Next year.

Even if you don't get marjoram and kohl?

Even so. I have flowers and fruit, and remember my prayers, and even if I did not spring would come anyhow. And that is eventually all a man can ask for.

A shame. Your folk have no spring festival of their own? In the lands I know, even those men who don't follow the Prophet's way have holidays much like our own... different names, no more, although of course what's the use of calling and blessing the sun if you do not acknowledge Mithra? Men do strange things.

Mehregan, doma, the springtime festival; Mithra is hailed as lord of kinship and alliance on this day, and this year I've much to thank him for.

It is a fitting holiday for these days. I have heard of this Mithra, significant in Iranian culture from my world, I do believe. I relocated the remains of one of his temples once.

Is that so! Well, I suppose it is the perogative of a god to exist in many worlds. I do not know your Iranians, but in Eloa, the Zarathustrian faith is the most common by far, and the Eastern covenant holds sway over hundreds of thousands of people.

Fascinating. I believe the religion lingers in my world still, but it is not one of the leading religions. I am also not as concerned with current events as I am with the past. History lends value to items and places and goals, not current significance.

Ahh, here we may be forced to disagree, History is all good and well, tradition keeps men whole. But wars are fought here and now, for here and now things. History is only ever a good excuse.

We may be indeed. As I am not a fighter, wars are significant to me in the way they shape a country and history, sometimes in fact eliminating a country from existence. I pay attention to wars in order to see what historical objects are at risk and need action to preserve, and relocate, and can give gain.

History does make current conflicts and issues richer; without context they often seem influenced by greed alone.
